Alla Charlotte wins PALM Urban Crafts 2014
Alla Charlotte, a young jewellery designer from Roeselare, received the PALM Urban Crafts Award 2014 at the awards ceremony at the Vooruit in Ghent.
The jury was impressed by her determination, authenticity and the way she creates her unique handmade jewellery. Charlotte manages to take you into her own fantasy world and she is clearly passionated about making jewellery. With Alla Charlotte the jury discovered a promising new crafter to follow the footsteps of last year’s winner and kite builder, Reinhart Paelinck. This year, 24 young crafters competed for the award. Next summer, Alla Charlotte will represent Urban Crafts and her jewels at the Burning Man festival, the ultimate gathering for the international makers scene.
Gold for Alla Charlotte
Charlotte Debyser from Roeselare is the young artist behind Alla Charlotte. Her works are usually a mixture of miniature portraits she painted herself combined with various metals, natural products and recuperated pieces of old jewellery. As a granddaughter of an antiquarian, she was always surrounded by antiques and brocante. This explains her passion for pieces with a past and a soul. Alla Charlotte's creations leave no one untouched. You love or hate them, but you will definitely  have seen them. Both in style, design and execution, her creations are absolutely unique. To appreciate her works of art, you must be willing to move away from your traditional views on jewellery and prepare yourself to be surprised.
Silver and bronze
Matthias De Pauw and Eno Swinnen finished respectively in second and third place. With Dancing on Pedals, Matthias De Pauw designs affordable bike hangers and recycles (parts) of old bikes to beautiful gems. The jury also praised rotoscoping artist Eno Swinnen, who makes an eclectic collection of gifs, videos and illustrations. His work is characterised by analog drawing and animation work, in perfect harmony with clearly Photoshopped geometric shapes.
